Pupils and staff at Bridgetown High School had to undergo trauma counselling after a pupil was stabbed to death on Wednesday March 1.
Lwando Masobe, 16, from Langa, died after allegedly being stabbed by a fellow Grade 10 pupil.
Jessica Shelver, Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson, confirmed the
incident.
Athlone SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Zita Norman, said when the police arrived on the scene, Lwando had already died of his injuries.
“It is alleged that the two pupils had an argument over dagga when the 16-year-old pupil took a knife from his pocket and stabbed the victim on the left side of his chest.
“The victim was aided onto a couch where he later passed away,” Sergeant Norman said.
Ms Shelver said, according to the information the WCED received, the teenagers were fighting over payment to the alleged perpetrator.
“The pupil will face disciplinary action in line with the school’s code of conduct. A school psychologist and social worker from our Metro Central district office visited the school on Wednesday to provide trauma counselling to the pupils, staff and the victim’s parents,” Ms Shelver said.
The suspect was arrested and appeared at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Thursday March 2.
At the time of going to press, police could not confirm whether the suspect was out on bail.
