Belgravia High School was the host venue for 18 schools who attended the ANC’s Athlone Parliamentary Constituency Office’s Career Expo, which was held on Wednesday April 19 and Thursday April 20.
The Career Expo targeted pupils in Grade 11 and Grade 12 from Crawford, Hanover Park, Heideveld, Langa, Lansdowne, and Manenberg, among others.
Belgravia High School principal, Andre Buis, said many pupils are not sure what career they want to pursue, and exhibitions like this, play an important role.
“What is nice about this, is that there are a number of SETAs(Sector Education and Training Authority) exhibiting, which gives pupils an even greater opportunity. The variety of career options here is fantastic – from Armscor, to the paramedics, and the fire department. Also, many were not aware of the different career opportunities within SAPS, for example. We are looking forward to have this as an annual event,” Mr Buis said.
Bonteheuwel High School’s Gladys Julies and Robert Stevens, both in Grade 12, said the information they received at the expo was invaluable.
“It has been a great help coming here today. I am filling in bursary application forms. Although I know what I want to do, today’s event helped me a lot, especially with my back-up plan,” Gladys said.
Robert added: “I learnt more about law enforcement today and what qualifications are needed. It motivated me so much more to go for my dream.”
