Church adopts home

Rector Mervyn van Wyk, from the Silvertown New Apostolic Church, hands over adult nappies to Erica Old Age Home manager Hendrietta Diko.

The congregation of the Silvertown New Apostolic Church adopted the Erica Old Age Home in Overton Road, Silvertown, as part of their community drive.

Rector Mervyn van Wyk and the youth choir visited the home on Sunday June 11 to provide some entertainment and hand over adult nappies.

The church assists the home regularly with chores, which is how church welfare co-ordinator Colin Thompson realised it needed adult nappies, as most of the residents are frail and cannot care for themselves.

Mr Van Wyk then asked his congregation to donate nappies.

He said the church needed to “practise what we preach” and show love and care for the elderly. The home’s manager, Hendrietta Diko, thanked the church for their generosity.

The church wants to donate to the home every three months.
