Noorudien Hassan, the attorney who was representing alleged gun-runner Irshaad Laher, was gunned down outside his Burwood Road home in Crawford on Monday night, November 7.
Mr Laher, a businessman with interests in two restaurant chains, was arrested for gun smuggling in July.
Lansdowne police spokesperson, Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka, said an eyewitness reported that Mr Hassan had been standing in his garden in front of his house at 10pm before going to sit in a car parked outside of his house.
A white Colt double cab bakkie without a canopy then pulled over on the opposite side of the road.
A man got out of the bakkie, approached Mr Hassan with a gun in his hand and fired shots through the passenger window.
According to the witness, when Mr Hassan got out the vehicle and ran for his life, several more shots were fired, after which the five suspects in the bakkie drove off in the direction of Kromboom Road, said Sergeant Mnyaka.
Mr Hassan’s friend who witnessed the shooting then took him to Kingsbury Hospital in Claremont where he succumbed to his injuries, having sustained two bullet wounds to the head and two to the left side of his body.
Cases of murder and attempted murder are being investigated and no arrests have been made yet.
