Ethan May, 11, from Bonteheuwel, and his dance partner Keziah Gabriels, 12, from Mitchell’s Plain, each need R30 000 to get to a dance competition in Denmark in July.
Ethan started dancing at 6, inspired by his elder brother, Alcino, who is also a dancer.
Ethan trains six days a week, so it can be a struggle balancing his dance practice with school.
“I get home from school, do homework and wash and then I go to practice, and when I get home, I eat and sleep. From Monday to Saturday, that is my routine.”
He has been training with the South African Dance Foundation for two years now.
His family have been holding karaoke evenings to raise the R30 000, which according to Ethan’s father, Alphonso May, must be paid by the end of May.
“I am very proud of my son,” Mr May said. “He will be representing Bonteheuwel, Cape Town, and South Africa. He has been working very hard for this.”
Ethan said dance made him happy and he was excited about going overseas.
“This is the first time that I will be going to Denmark. My dream is to become a professional dancer so that I can teach other children and get them off the streets,” he said.
