Silvertown Educare Centre is appealing for help to upgrade their play parks.
The centre was built in 1970 and currently looks after 150 children, aged two to six years old, and has four classrooms.
Florence Reynolds, who has been the principal for 28 years, said they have two play areas but one is completely unsafe and the children are not allowed there. The other play area needs more swings and new sand.
It currently costs R80 000 every month to run the centre, which also needs a fresh coat of paint, inside and outside, new gates, as well as curtains, a stove and oven.
Ms Reynolds said the centre offers children a cooked meal for lunch as most of the children come from poor communities and don’t have another meal at home.
“We take care of the children, we wash them before they go home and if they need clean clothes we put that on for them and wash their other clothes. We do this because we love what we do. What you teach them here will stay with them forever. Sometimes they lose it along the way because they make bad choices but they come back to it,” she said.
Ms Reynolds appealed to the community for donations.
“Be generous, have it in your hearts to donate to us,” she said.
