Five men were arrested in Manenberg for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition and theft out of a motor vehicle, on Friday May 18, following a high speed chase.
The men, aged 25, 33, 37, 38, 46, were first spotted in Rondebosch when offficers responded to a complaint of theft out of motor vehicle. As police arrived, they saw the five men tampering with a vehicle. The men jumped into a getaway car and fled when they saw the police.
Captain Ian Bennett, Manenberg SAPS spokesman, said police chased the men down Klipfontein road towards Manenberg, where the men stoped and fired at the police. The officers returned fire and arrested the five men.
No one was injured. A 9mm pistol with three live rounds of ammunition and imitation firearms were confiscated.
“The perpetrators face charges of attempted murder of a police officers, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition and theft out of a motor vehicle,” Captain Bennett said.
A 38-year-old Rondebosch East man was arrested for opening a false case on Thursday May 17 about a burlglary at someone else’s home.
The man was caught after the investigating officer went to the address to investigate.
The owner of the house was shocked when hearing of the inciden and said no crime had occurred there.
The officer then arrested and charged the complainant for perjury.
