On Sunday February 18, a vehicle was hijacked in Belgravia Road, Athlone, along with an 88-year-old woman, according to a City statement.
The driver had left it idling while going into a house to fetch something when a man got in, pulled a gun on the elderly woman and drove off with her.
Neighbourhood watch members witnessed the hijacking and alerted Metro Police officers on patrol in the area.
The officers pursued the vehicle, but it failed to stop and hit at least two other vehicles before it was cornered on Racecourse Road between Melomed Hospital and Access Park, Kenilworth. The hijacker made a run for it, but officers gave chase and arrested a 40-year-old suspect who was detained at the Athlone police station and charged with possession of a suspected hijacked motor vehicle, kidnapping, resisting arrest and reckless and negligent driving.
The elderly woman was taken by ambulance to Groote Schuur Hospital for further assistance and trauma counselling.
