Four Groenvlei High School pupils are gearing up to take part in the Cape Town Cycle Tour next month.
Their entry into the cycle tour was made possible by Ari’s Cancer Foundation which works with young adults and cancer victims.
Every year the foundation receives a number of entries for the tour through its charity component. This year they decided to sponsor adolescents who are interested in the cycle tour, which will take place on Sunday March 11.
Pupil Riedwaan Samuel, 17, said they were hard at work preparing for the 109km race.
“Active Bodies and Virgin Active Constantia have been helping to train us for the big day and we train twice a week,” he said.
Pupil Mickyle Green, 17, said the training has been effective and the team remains positive and motivated.
He said they still needed sponsors for cycling gear, including helmets, bicycles, and water bottles.
Tathan Choffinal, 17, was excited to participate in the cycle tour as he said it would help raise funds for the school’s Legacy Outreach programme.
“For every kilometer that we cycle, we are asking people to donate R5 to R10 which will go towards our legacy project.”
Riedwaan, Mickyle and Tathan are all in matric and they will be joined by Grade 10 pupil, Taswell Pinto, 16.
Two Groenvlei High School pupils will also be taking part in the Two Oceans half marathon, which takes place on Saturday March 31.
Austin Pardenwatcher and headboy Cheslin January are also in need of sponsors for their gear and water bottles.
Cheslin said this is an opportunity for the boys to get involved with school projects as they often shy away from them and leave it up to the girls.
“This will teach them both discipline at school and outside of school as well as how to work in a team, and improve their self-confidence and allow them to persevere and move forward to achieve their dreams.”
