Isaac and Lorraine Galant from Belgravia Estate celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday June 18.
The couple met each other at school, when both attended the old Dutch Reformed School in Philippi.
After Ms Galant received her confirmation blessing, Mr Galant asked to sit next to her on a youth trip and started visiting her at home.
Two years later, they got married in court. However, their joy was interrupted when the “wedding bands” had to be read three weeks consecutively in church to receive their blessing. The reading of the “wedding bands” was a requirement by the New Apostolic Church in those years. However, this practice was abolished many years ago. This was to see if anyone would oppose the marriage. However, by law, they were already married.
The couple have four children, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild and they are still very much in love.
They said their marriage is based on three pillars – to love each other unconditionally; to support one another, irrespective of the situation, as both of them had serious health issues and are thankful to be alive; and to be thankful for their blessings.
Mr and Ms Galant received their anniversary blessing in the New Apostolic Church in Duran Road, Silvertown, where Rector Colwyn Beukes officiated it.
