On Sunday July 16, a man was hijacked in Athlone while on his way to a shop.
According to Athlone police station’s spokeswoman, Sergeant Zita Norman, the man’s BMW 320i was stoned and his windows smashed while he was driving.
When he stopped, the hijackers jumped into his vehicle with a gun. They then drove around with the man until they got to Vygieskraal where they started stripping the car of its parts.
The owner managed to run away and was found by members of the neighbourhood watch in Belgravia Road, Athlone. A case of hijacking was opened at Athlone police station. The victim was not injured and no arrests have been made yet.
On the same day, a 20-year-old man was shot twice on the corner of 11th Avenue and Bokmakierie Street.
He was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital for medical treatment. Five cartridges were found on the scene. No arrests were made yet. Anyone with information can contact the investigating officer Sergeant Daniel Solomons on 021 697 9238/39.
On Saturday July 15, five men robbed a shop on the corner of Belgravia and Repulse Road, in Lincoln Estate. Three men had firearms and took R11 500 cash and cigarettes to the value of R50 000. The robbery took place after 8am.
Sergeant Norman said the employees were locked up in the storeroom at the back of the shop and later managed to free themselves once the suspects were gone.
“Two cellphones were also taken in the process. No shots were fired and no injuries sustained. Video footage will be downloaded and viewed,” she said.
On Wednesday July 12, two men aged 18 and 20 were arrested in Manenberg for attempted murder and the illegal possession of a gun. Manenberg police responded to a complaint of gang members shooting on Duinefontein Road and as they approached the scene, they saw two men firing shots randomly.
According to Captain Ian Bennett, Manenberg police station’s spokesperson, the suspects ran in different directions when they saw the police. The 20-year-old was cornered on the corner of Duinefontein and Ruimte roads.
Police arrested him and a .38 revolver was confiscated.
“The 18-year-old ran towards Merlin Road where he was cornered. He turned and tried to shoot at the SAPS members in pursuit of him. The SAPS member fired a shot at him hitting him in the left side of his chest. He was taken to Heideveld Emergency Centre for medical treatment.” said Captain Bennett.
A 9mm gun was found in his possession.
