A 25-year-old man was found burned and beaten to death after he had allegedly attempted to rob a person close to the Nyanga Junction transport hub on Wednesday November 22 and the community cornered him.
According to Manenberg police spokesman Captain Bennett the man had several wounds to his head and signs that he was set alight.
“We encourage community not to take the law into their own hands. Community members partaking in or in-sighting such violence will be charged with murder and will be prosecuted. We cannot justify community actions because of criminal action. The law provides for a citizens arrest where a crime is committed in the presence of a community. The community needs to call SAPS in order for the law to take its course and for the perpetrator to be brought before a court of law,” said Captain Bennett.
Athlone police are searching for four men in connection with a shooting in Kewtown on Saturday November 25 in which four people were injured.
A 30-year-old woman and three men, 24, 39 and 42 had been sitting on the stairs and listening to music when they were shot.
Upon arrival, police found the victims lying on the ground in a pool of blood. According to Athlone spokesman Sergeant Zita Norman, the woman sustained injuries to the lower back, one man was wounded in his abdomen and chest, one man in his chest and the last man was shot in his neck and right leg. Three of the injured were taken to Groote Schuur Hospital and the other man to Mitchell’s Plain Medical Centre for treatment. Seven cartridges were found on the scene. Two of the victims are in a critical condition.
Manenberg police arrested two men, aged 32 and 37, from Mitchell’s Plain, for the possession of drugs, on Thursday November 23.
Police searched a premises in Devil’s Peak Road, Heideveld, and found 152 units of tik, seven mandrax tablets and five sticks of dagga.
According to Captain Bennett, the drugs were all packaged separately and looked like they were to be sold.
The men appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Friday November 24, facing charges of possession of drugs.
