On Saturday September 30, Manenberg police arrested a 30-year-old man from Manenberg for the possession of an illegal firearm.
While patrolling the area after having received reports of shooting near Karen Court, police also received information that someone, believed to be wanted in connection with a crime, was standing in Karen Court.
According to Manenberg police spokesman Captain Ian Bennett, as police patrolled, they spotted the suspect and when police stopped and searched the man, they found a .38 revolver and five live rounds wrapped in a pillow case.
The suspect was arrested and was due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday October 2.
On the same day, Manenberg police came under attack while attending to a crime scene in Thames Avenue Manenberg.
According to Captain Bennett, it is alleged that rival gangs had been shooting at each other in Thames Avenue Manenberg.
When the gangs retreated, a 27-year-old man was found dead in Thames Avenue, having been shot in the back.
While police gathered crime scene evidence, gunshots erupted close by, in Thames Avenue.
Police investigated and saw the rival gangs shooting at each other.
When they tried to intervene, the gangs fired shots at police, with cops returning fire as the gang members fled.
No one was arrested.
On Friday September 29, a 62-year-old woman was arrested for the possession of drugs.
While patrolling the area, police searched various houses including one in Thames Walk, Manenberg. The 62-year-old woman was alone at home during the search. Police found 13 dagga cigarettes and three bank packets of dagga.
According to Captain Bennett, this had been sale and not personal use.
The woman was due to appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday October 2 .
