On the same day a 40-year-old man was arrested after he attempted to steal a car in Athlone which belonged to a 63-year-old pensioner.

The man parked his white Nissan bakkie in George Street, Athlone and locked all his doors. When he returned, he saw an unknown man inside his bakkie. The pensioner then tried to keep him inside the bakkie while he called for help.

According to Athlone SAPS spokeswoman, Sergeant Zita Norman, the suspect had a car key on him while the complainant grabbed him to prevent him from running away.

The pensioner then heard someone telling him that the suspect was going to stab him so he quickly let go and one of the community members helped by grabbing the screwdriver from the suspect’s hand.

Two security guards then took the suspect to the police station where he was arrested.
