Twenty-year-old Nabeel Isaacs, who allegedly murdered his girlfriend Zeenit Cupido, has been released on R1000 bail.
The 20-year-old victim from Manenberg was fatally stabbed in Mr Isaac’s home on Friday March 30.
Zeenit’s mother Julene Cupido, said the pair had been friends for six years already and that they had even attended each other’s matric balls.
Zeenit was the eldest of three children. She has a younger sister aged 16 and a brother aged 9.
Manenberg Community Police Forum’s executive member, Faldiela de Vries described Zeenit as a very quiet child and said that everyone who knew her, missed her terribly. “We are all still in shock and traumatised. The neighbours are quite emotional about it. She frequented his house, she was like a daughter to them,” she said.
Zeenit was buried in accordance with Muslim rites on Saturday March 31.
Manenberg police station’s spokesman, Captain Ian Bennett, said Mr Isaacs had been arrested on the same day that the murder took place. He said the accused appeared at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday, April 3, and that he was released on
R1 000 bail.
Ms Cupido said she had previously warned her daughter to leave Mr Isaacs after he allegedly hit her in her face while she was still at high school.
She said in February she once again told her daughter to leave him (Mr Isaacs) after Zeenit had told her that he had another girlfriend. “She was very upset that he had another girlfriend. Two weeks ago she came and said that he wanted to get married and I asked her if she is mad because marriage won’t fix anything,” said Ms Cupido.
Ms Cupido said her family was broken and that they were struggling to cope with their loss. “My daughter is not coping and my mother too – they were very close, we are a close family. She was so excited about her 21st birthday in December. She was planning it with the neighbour’s daughter. She wanted an all-white party and then she changed her mind because he asked her to get married.”
The case has been postponed to Tuesday June 5.
