Moulana Ihsaan Hendricks’s term as president of the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has come to an end after 10 years.
In 2006, Mr Hendricks was elected as president and then re-elected to run for a second term in 2011, which now ends.
According to the council’s constitution, no president can serve more than two consecutive terms.
“I will continue to serve the MJC and remain loyal to the principles of the founding fathers of the MJC in 1945. I served the MJC for the last 30 years in various positions. I also enjoyed the position as deputy president in the time of Sheikh Ebrahim Gabriels for seven years,” Mr Hendricks said.
MJC spokeswoman Nabeweya Malick said Mr Hendricks had helped the MJC through some tough times.
“Moulana Hendricks has served the MJC through some challenging times, such as 10 years ago with the Afghanistan and Palestine situation. He is very popular in the international area, which resulted in the MJC reaching international recognition and therefore becoming one of the executive bodies on the Islamic Union of Muslim Scholars.
“He has really done the community proud when it comes to representing the MJC in the world,” Ms Malick said.
Nominations for the MJC’s new president, first and second deputy presidents, secretary and treasurer opened on Friday April 1, and close on Friday April 8. The new president will be elected on Saturday April 23.
