Hanover Park residents can look forward to a new R372 million hospital come 2028, according to the provincial health department.
The new facility will include emergency, midwife and obstetrics, rapid assessment, acute, chronic care, family care, x-ray, rehabilitation, support care, pre- and post-natal care, and a pharmacy units.
It will be just over a kilometre away from the existing facility and treat an average of 1124 patients a day, according to provincial health department spokeswoman Gabriele James.
Once the new hospital was built, the existing one would operate as a “wellness hub”, providing screening and testing, family planning, immunisation and medication collection, said Health and Wellness MEC Mireille Wenger.
Ward councillor Antonio van der Rheede said: “Everyone is elated with the state-of-the-art facility that is going to be built for Hanover Park and its surrounding communities.”
Ms Wenger said the new hospital would reduce queues and ensure quality care for the community.
“This new state-of-the-art community health centre we have in planning will better serve Hanover Park and surrounding communities, which includes 24/7 emergency care. We are delighted to have the full support of the community to proceed with this project.”
