Thirty pupils at Easter Peak Primary School were delighted to receive new toys and clothing from Ozzies Fitness Club members who have also been teaching them life skills.
Owner Clavin Hendricks said that the club was initiated 12 years ago to bring fitness and healthy living back into the community of Bonteheuwel.
The school project is supported by all club members who donate funds to buy the toys and clothing.
Mr Hendricks said last year the club donated food to poor children.
The club goes around to schools on the Cape Flats and spends eight weeks at each school teaching children life skills, and raising awareness about gangsterism, rape and bullying.
The children attend the workshop once a week and those who complete the course are rewarded. “It feels great to make a difference in their lives.
“We are giving back to those who need it. It really puts a smile on their faces,” he said.
Club activities which run throughout the year include walks, hikes, marathons, family days and trips to the beach.
Acting head of department for Easter Peak Primary School, Senami Syce, said the workshops were a positive activity for pupils to take part in.
“They are extremely committed and hard-working, they really deserve this today as they have put a lot of effort into their school work,” she said.
Ms Syce said the workshops had boosted the pupils’ confidence and helped those who struggled to maintain friendships.
“Some of these children really come from disadvantaged backgrounds and there are often not activities like these available to them in their communities. Groups like these where they really spend time with the pupils are very valuable and we welcome them back to our school next year, we are very pleased with it,” said Ms Syce.
She said what really stood out was that none of the pupils dropped out of the course. “They really enjoyed it,” she said.
