■ On Saturday November 12, the City of Cape Town opened its new Disaster Risk Management (DRM) volunteer centre in Athlone. This was one of three centres opened on the day and brings to 13 the number of active DRM volunteer bases across the metropole. The facilities will serve as central meeting and deployment points for the various volunteer units across the metro. The DRM volunteer corps has nearly 500 active members who assist the City’s emergency services with humanitarian relief operations and firefighting, among other things.
