Police came under attack, this time in Manenberg, while arresting a 35-year-old man on Saturday January 6 for the possession of an illegal firearm.
According to Manenberg police station’s spokesman, Captain Ian Bennett, police were deployed into the area to combat illegal gang activity when they saw two men walking down Duinefontein Road towards Caltex garage.
As police approached the men, they ran in different directions. Police chased the one man who ran towards Storms River Road.
As the man got to Storms River, he pulled out a firearm and pointed it at a police officer who then shot at the suspect.
The suspect fell to the ground and police then removed the firearm from him. It was discovered that the firearm was a replica toy gun.
The suspect was injured in his foot and was taken to the Heideveld Emergency Centre for medical treatment.
As police attended to the scene, community members pelted the police vehicles with stones which forced police SAPS to withdraw from the scene. Last year the Athlone News reported that four police officers were injured when arresting a suspect in Hanover Park (‘“Don’t attack police when we try to help’ “, Athlone News, September 27 2017).
A case of possession of a firearm has been opened for investigation.
The 35-year-old was arrested and appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
A 25-year-old man is in a critical condition after he was shot on Thursday January 4 during a shoot-out between two rival gangs in Manenberg.
The victim was standing in Grootkop Road when he was approached by two men who fired several shots at him. As he ran for cover he was shot in his back, and the suspects fled the scene on foot, leaving the 25-year-old male in a critical condition.
He was taken to Heideveld Emergency Centre for medical treatment.
A case of attempted murder has been opened for investigation and no arrests have been made.
Hanover Park police arrested 16 people during a crime intelligence operation on Thursday January 4. Houses in Derwent Lane, Lansur Road, Hanover Park Avenue and Lonedown Road were cordoned off and searches were conducted for firearms, illegal substances as well as repeat offenders for whom warrants of arrest were issued, which include charges of various crimes such as murder, possession of drugs and shoplifting. Arrests made dated back to cases from 2008.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at his house in Caspian Place on a warrant of arrest issued for a crime committed in Claremont in October 2013.
A 56-year-old man was arrested at his house in Athburg Walk on two warrants of arrest issued for crime committed in Philippi during December 2001 and 2015.
A 24-year-old woman was arrested at her house in Hanover Park Avenue on two warrants of arrest issued for a crime committed in Claremont during December 2015 and Rondebosch during December 2014.
A 46-year-old man was arrested at his house in Athburg Walk, Hanover Park, on a warrant of arrest issued for a crime committed in Lansdowne in April 2012.

A 20-year-old man was arrested at his house in Athburg Walk, Hanover Park, on a warrant of arrest issued for a serious crime committed in Philippi in November 2016.
A 24-year-old man was arrested at a well-known drug outlet in Groenal Walk, Hanover Park. Police confiscated drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police also arrested two men aged 18 and 25 at Johndown Walk and Athens Walk for the illegal possession of drugs including heroin.
Two men aged 46 and 47 were arrested at houses in Derwent Court and Lansia Walk for the possession of dagga.
Police also arrested four men aged from 37 to 54 inside a house in Soetwater Court, Hanover Park, for the possession of heroin.
The total estimated street value of all drugs confiscated was R4 000.
The suspects appeared at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday January 8.
