Shazia Amoo, who matriculated from Rylands High School with seven distinctions, was among the top pupils in the province honoured by Premier Helen Zille, last week.
She received the top mark at her school for mathematics and physical science.
Shazia has been accepted at both Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town (UCT).
She has opted to study at UCT where she has enrolled for a chemical engineering degree. She is one of four children.
Her eldest brother, Goolam Amoo, is an engineer and her other siblings, Salma and Mogamat Amoo, are both studying at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
Shazia’s uncle, Ismail Teladia, said her late grandmother, Hadji Salama Bedford, was the matriculant’s “number one fan – always boasting that she was better than her eldest brother”.
“She sadly passed away a week before the matric results were released. She would have been so proud of Shazia,” Mr Teladia said.
