R29m road upgrade project under way

Parts of Jakes Gerwel drive will be under construction for maintenance over the next few months.

Road maintenance is under way on Jakes Gerwel Drive and will continue until the end of September.

The City of Cape Town’s road maintenance project, including resurfacing portions of Jakes Gerwel Drive in the south region close to Philippi, started on Tuesday May 7.

The project includes construction on two sections of this road: the first section entails work along Jakes Gerwel Drive, in the southbound direction only, between the N2 freeway and Heideveld Road to Klipfontein Road; and the second section entails work along Jakes Gerwel Drive between Govan Mbeki Drive and Weltevreden Road.

Felicity Purchase, mayoral committee member for transport, said the City had invested more than R29 million in the maintenance of Jakes Gerwel, which was one of the most important routes for commuters and freight vehicles in Cape Town.

“All roadworks come with some inconveniences, but maintenance projects was critical as these prolong the lifespan of our road network, which is one of the city’s biggest assets,” she said.

She said the movement of people and goods are pivotal in sustaining and supporting the local economy and that this investment would ensure that the road was kept in a good condition for some years to come.

The roadworks stretch over 3.4km and will result in a 75 000m² area of newly resurfaced roadway.

Neighbouring suburbs such as Vanguard Estate and Philippi, as well as commuters travelling along this route to areas such as Weltevreden Valley, Mitchell’s Plain and Strandfontein will benefit from the project.

“Once completed, motorists will be able to enjoy smooth and safe journeys along these sections of Jakes Gerwel Drive for many years to come,” said Ms Purchase.

Work takes place from 7.30am until 5pm from Monday to Saturday.

The teams will ensure that at least one lane is always open to traffic in both directions and that all lanes are reopened to traffic by 3pm on the southbound carriageway and by 5pm on the northbound carriageway.
