R300 000 worth of dagga and more than R14 500 were seized and a 37-year-old man was arrested during a drug bust in Manenberg last week, say police.
Officers acting on a tip-off made the arrest in York Road, Sherwood Park, on Thursday October 10, according to Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett.
“The officers conducted a search of the premises and discovered 108 one-kilogram bags and six bales of sealed bags of dagga, with an estimated street value of R300 000. Cash totalling R14 556 was also handed in as evidence,” he said.
In a separate incident on the same day, the Anti-Gang Unit arrested a 27-year-old man in Junction Peak Road, Heideveld, for the possession of a .38 Special Rossi revolver, which had been reported stolen in the Somerset West precinct in April.
Both men appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court, on Monday October 14.
On Tuesday October 8, an officer was injured while trying to stop stone-throwing on the corner of Manenberg Avenue and Renoster Road, said Captain Bennett.
“As the members got out of their vehicle to intervene, the youth of Manenberg turned on SAPS members by pelting them with stones. One of our members was struck in his face leaving him with serious facial injuries.
“These attacks on police is a serious criminal offence and it cannot be taken lightly. As young as these young people are, if they become lawless, SAPS will take serious action against them which could lead to a juvenile detention centre,” he said.
Captain Bennett urged parents to help SAPS stop this violent behaviour.
“Stone throwing has escalated, and the danger is that it has become socially acceptable within Manenberg now. The community demands services from SAPS, yet they attack us and expect SAPS members not to respond”
