A 63-year-old rape survivor hopes that justice will be served on the man who attacked her.
The disabled woman from Hazendal, who is wheelchair bound, and suffers from schizophrenia, was allegedly raped by a 38-year-old man well-known to her family. He is the father of her sister’s grandchild and had been visiting the family home for 17 years.
She said the rape occurred on Tuesday February 27, after 5am.
“He closed my mouth and he said he would kill me. I still scream at night and I wet the bed. I hope that he will be sentenced. I am very scared of the appearance of him in court,” she said.
The man appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday March 25 and the case was postponed to Tuesday June 25.
The woman’s sister said the man’s actions had shocked the family because he doesn’t have a history of sexual assault.
“I am feeling very emotional about this. I never thought that he would ever do this,” she said.
Athlone police station spokeswoman Sergeant Zita Norman said the case was still being investigated and that the suspect had abandoned his bail application.
“This is very sad. We want to ask the community to be vigilant for every woman and child. This is a wake up call to the community,” she said.
