A wreath-laying ceremony was held outside the Church Street house in Athlone, where slain Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) cadre, Anton Fransch was killed 29 years ago. On Saturday November 17, leaders and members of the ANC, including deputy minister of home affairs, Fatima Chohan, provincial secretary, Faiez Jacobs, Anton Fransch’s son, Nathan Asher, and pupils from Modderdam High School, gathered outside the house in memory of him. In 2014, a plaque was erected on the boundary wall of the house in honour of the MK soldier. Anton was killed in what has been dubbed the Battle of Athlone, where he had a seven-hour gun battle with the combined apartheid security forces. He was killed after a hand grenade was flung into the bedroom he was taking cover in. Anton Fransch grew up in Bonteheuwel and attended Modderdam High School.
