“According to witnesses the security company with Sassa payouts, stopped in Kiaat Road and while the security company was busy off-loading the equipment, four armed men approached the security officials and asked for money and keys to the vehicles.
“The suspects were disturbed by the community and a Metro police vehicle that passed the scene. The suspects then fled the scene in a white single cab bakkie.
“Two firearms were taken from the security guards. No money was taken and there were no injuries. Police opened an armed robbery case,” Captain Louw said.
Pensioners and grant recipients had to wait longer for their payouts while police attended to the matter at the scene.
Ward 50 councillor, Angus McKenzie, said this incident was a selfish and callous act.
He called on the community to be more vigilant.
“Unfortunately, we have sick people who have no conscious by trying to steal from the poor,” he said.
