The City of Cape Town said it welcomed the first ShotSpotter – linked conviction and sentence, handed down in the Wynberg Regional Court earlier this month.
Virgil Koopman was arrested in Manenberg in October last year on a charge of discharging a firearm in a municipal area.
The City’s Strategic Surveillance Unit supplied SAPS with CCTV footage of the incident as well as the ShotSpotter alert that was registered on the gunshot detection system at the time of the incident.
Koopman was sentenced to 12 months, suspended for five years, provided he is not found guilty of a similar offence during this period.
The city commended the persistence and dedication of the investigating officer and his team in this case.
Metro police arrested two men, aged 28 and 33, after finding them in possession of drugs with an estimated street value of
R20 000 in Colorado Street, Primrose Park, last Wednesday, June 20. Officers searched the premises after a tip-off and found one man in possession of five zip-lock packets of heroin, 16 units of heroin and three large bags of tik. The other man was caught wrapping 71 units of heroin.
The men were handed over to Manenberg police.
Metro police officers chased down a driver after he left the Caltex Garage at the corner of Lansdowne and Strandfontein roads without paying for his petrol on Saturday, June 23 .
Officers managed to force the man to stop the silver Hyundai along Strandfontein Road and upon searching the vehicle, found a bankie of dagga. The suspect was taken back to the Caltex where the owners indicated that they want to lay a charge of theft. Officers also found out that the vehicle had been stolen in Stellenbosch in September last year. The suspect was detained at Philippi police station on charges of theft, possession of drugs and of a stolen vehicle.
