■ The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Fatima Chohan, visited Easter Peak Primary School on Friday September 14, to hand over Smart IDs to support staff at the school and to round off Mandela Day initiatives. Smart IDs were handed over to Gertruida Basson, the school governing body chairperson, Stephen Casper, who helps with security at the school, and Carmenita van Daten, who is a volunteer at the school’s feeding scheme. Ms Chohan was pleased with the upgrades and visited several classrooms where she engaged with the pupils and stressed the importance of education. The ID handover was part of a nationwide campaign to extend Smart IDs to citizens. The Deputy Ministry has been involved with school outreach programmes in Manenberg over a number of years, focusing on good citizenship, career opportunities and ID handovers.
