A 17-year-old teen from Crawford was shot and killed on Sunday June 19 in Hanover Park where he visited a friend.
Zubair Joemath’s father had dropped him off at his friend’s place in Hanover Park Avenue, where he was later shot.
Colonel Dennis Abels, station commander for Philippi SAPS, said the victim was shot twice in the head as well as in the right and left arms.
Colonel Abels said the victim was taken to Groote Schuur Hospital where he died.
Ebrahim Abrahams, the chairperson of the Philippi Community Police Forum, said the shooting appears to be a case of mistaken identity. “The friend whom he visited was allegedly related to some gang. There are, however, different stories going around.
“The community is very shocked but remain silent. I cannot confirm if it was gang-related but there are claims that the alleged suspects belong to a gang,” said Mr Abrahams.
Zubair’s janaaza was on Monday, June 20.
