Eight people, taking part in the Total Shutdown protest, have been arrested for public violence on Jakes Gerwel Drive this morning.
The protests resulted in road closures in various parts of the city during peak traffic.
The protesters were voicing their dissatisfaction at the state of policing in their areas.
Hanover Park Avenue was blocked at Surran Road by a group of protesters.
Some of the roads which were closed included Ottery Road near Strandfontein, Voortrekker Road and 8th Avenue in Kensington, Jakes Gerwel Drive and Bluegum Avenue in Bonteheuwel.
Police used stun grenades and rubber bullets to try and disperse the crowds after violence flared up.
Mayoral committee member for safety, security and social services, JP Smith, said, “The organisers did not make an application in terms of the national legislation and this means that the road closures this morning are therefore not lawful.”
All the roads which were closed this morning have since been reopened. Public order police continue to monitor the situation.
