Two people were killed in a fire which destroyed 179 shacks in Vygieskraal informal settlement in Belgravia yesterday.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Service deployed 12 firefighting appliances, a rescue vehicle, a specialised vehicle and 28 staff members to the scene.
A total of 719 people have been affected.
The scene was handed over to the police for investigation.
Meanwhile, the Gift of the Givers has offered its services to the victims.
They will assist with humanitarian relief and provide food and blankets.
The City’s Disaster Risk Management (DRM) spokesperson, Charlotte Powell, said: “DRM will complete their assessment this morning. At this stage no emergency sheltering has been activated.”
