The City of Cape Town’s Department of Social Development hosted a Women for Change workshop to discuss the achievements and challenges women on this programme face daily.
The workshop was hosted at the Athlone civic hall last Wednesday.
A total of 247 women who are contracted on the Women for Change programme from Athlone, Manenberg, Gugulethu, Hanover Park, Ravensmead, Uitsig, Elsies River, Delft, Bishop Lavis, Nyanga and Belhar, attended the workshop.
They have been recruited to help uplift areas where City-owned rental stock is situated.
Siyabulela Mamkeli, the City’s mayoral committee member for area central, attended the workshop and delivered the keynote address.
“Each of these women has made a significant impact on the community. From identifying and helping to address safety concerns within the community, to detecting individuals at risk of social challenges like truancy, substance abuse and domestic violence; and linking them with relevant services. Your contribution to this programme is invaluable to the communities that you serve. You have proven that the relationships that you build with the people in your community and the compassion with which you so boldly embrace providing home-based care services to the elderly, are nothing short of phenomenal,” said Mr Mamkeli.
“It is extremely important that we review these types of projects, so that we are able to help participants make the right decisions so that the project runs better than it ever did before,” he said.
