Youth do their bit for Mandela Day

Making sandwiches, from left, are Shakeela Mclean, from Grassdale High School, and Latitha Matiwane and Rylie Rhode, both from Groenvlei High School. They are all in Grade 11.

Youth who are part of the Leaders’ Quest programme took time from their school holidays to help others for Mandela Day. They made 300 sandwiches for homeless shelters, knitted squares for blankets to be distributed to Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, and covered donated books for school libraries. The two-year programme by Life Choices, a non-profit organisation, helps Grade 11 and 12 pupils from the Cape Flats by teaching them leadership and improving their academic performance.

Thandile Jacobs, Achume Xaka, and Mubeen Parker, all Grade 11 pupils at Oaklands High School, covered books.
Adelah Meyer from Grassdale High School, and Sinelizwi Manentsa from Oaklands High School, both Grade 11, took part in the knitting project.
