Be careful when selling things on social media

Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi, Bishop Lavis police spokesman

Bishop Lavis SAPS management urges people who use social media to advertise items for sale or respond to items as advertised, to exercise caution when they arrange to meet with possible buyers to conclude a business deal.

Well-trained conmen sometimes arrange with prospective buyers to meet at a secluded place. Once the victim arrives, they are often robbed of all cash and belongings and sometimes assaulted.

In some case, we are informed that victims are given addresses in informal settlements. Upon arrival, someone will view the item then claim they need to fetch money. When they return, they are with three or four companions who rob the victim.
