The match between hosts Cape Town Cricket Club and the University of the Western Cape (UWC) was abandoned after eight overs in Plumstead on Sunday following a freak accident.
Lwando Tywaku of UWC was knocked unconscious after being struck on the back of his head with the ball while attempting to score a run.
The incident happened when a fielder from Cape Town threw the ball towards the stumps in an attempt to run out Tywaku.
The ball however ricocheted from the turf and hit Tywaku under the back flap of his helmet.
Anxious officials and players rushed to his aid while paramedics arrived shortly.
Tywaku was stabilised and taken to hospital. The match was abandoned with UWC on 19/3 after they elected to bat.
Tywaku, according to a senior club official, has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering from the ordeal.
Meanwhile, in other action on Saturday, Gareth Roderick, Green Point’s captain, scored an unbeaten ton to pave the way for his side’s two-wicket win over Western Province to throw the race for the Western Province Premier League wide open.
Only six points separates Rondebosch and frontrunner, Western Province who top the table with 52 points with Rondebosch after beating Claremont, occupying second place with 46 points.
But it was Roderick who stole the show on a blistering hot afternoon on the Atlantic seaboard with a fine 100 not out from 98 deliveries in a tense fixture with the home side only clinching victory in the last over.
After being sent into bat, the visitors amassed 278/7 in their 50 overs with openers Derek Mitchell (91) and Gavin Kaplan (81) producing an excellent opening partnership of 165 runs while Justin Broad added a valuable 57.
But this, in the end, was just not enough as the home side’s batters, led by Roderick, knuckled down with fine contributions from Patrick van Niekerk (42), Rashard Gibbs (34), Adam Scher (31) and Jurie Norval (29) to pave the way to victory.
Green Point now stands on 35 points from 13 games and prepare to travel to the UWC campus in Bellville next week.
UWC, meanwhile, made a winning return to action with a 46-run victory over Kraaifontein after setting the home side a target of 219 after they were sent into bat.
Lwando Tywaku top scored with 49 runs while his teammate and seam bowler Liyema Waqu took 4/36 in 10 overs.
