A combination of good batting and bowling helped Green Point Cricket Club beat Rylands Cricket Club in a Western Province Cricket Association (WPCA) Premier League one-day match, in Green Point, at the weekend.

Riaaz Teladia, from Rylands, scored a half-a-century (55 runs), while Mujahid Behardien played to a hard-fought 44 runs to place the Athlone-based outfit at 196 runs.

With seven wickets down, Teladia made Green Point’s bowlers uncomfortable, forcing them to make errors with the red ball.

But Green Point’s fielding was up for the task, although it took them 49.1 overs to dismantle Rylands.

Spinner Guy Sheena made it his day with the ball, taking an impressive four wickets for 27 runs.

Seam bowler Wesley Bedja took two wickets for 26 runs.

With the pitch favouring batsmen, Green Point knew exactly what to do when they stepped in after lunch.

Patrick van Niekerk scored 69 runs, while Gareth Roderick played to an unbeaten 58 runs. Green Point reached 200/5 after 34 overs, winning by five wickets.

Up in Constantia, Claremont welcomed Durbanville in what was dubbed as one of the matches to watch out for this past weekend.

The clash lived up to expectations with Leon le Roux scoring a century for Durbanville.

Claremont set an impressive 292/5 after 50 overs. Matthew de Villiers was instrumental with the bat despite falling seven runs short of a century (93 runs). His teammate, Daniel Smith did well with the bat, scoring 72 runs for Claremont.

But with the bat it was Le Roux’s day. He scored an impressive 100 runs before being dismissed. His teammate Jean Strydom scored 58.

Their success was short lived as Claremont’s Gavin Dickenson and Harlan Greig had other plans. Dickinson received his fiver (5/39), while Greig got 2/26. Together they helped Claremont to bowl out Durbanville for 227 runs in 46.5 overs, ending the day on a 65-run win.

Meanwhile, WPCA Premier League reigning champions, Milnerton Cricket Club beat Cape Town Cricket Club by seven wickets in Milnerton on Saturday.

They bowled out Cape Town for 91 runs in 38.5 overs, before reaching the target in 22 overs.

Milnerton’s coach, Craig Phillips said they are unbeaten in four games and will look to take it a game at a time this season. On Saturday, they host the big hitting Claremont, in Milnerton.

“Generally we carried over pretty much the same team, with an additional one or two players this season. We are looking very balanced, keeping things simple and realising every Saturday is going to be a challenge so we got to be at our best all the time,” said Phillips.
