Thandi Manikivana, acting provincial secretary, ANC
The ANC in the Western Cape commends the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) for reopening the investigation into Ashley Kriel’s death, after respected forensic scientist David Klatzow, who has been working on the case for 29 years uncovered possible evidence suggesting that there might have been more to Ashley’s murder than what apartheid security policeman Jeffrey Benzien told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (“Call to reopen Kriel case”, Athlone News, March 9).
We commend the Kriel family, Ashley’s sisters Michel Assure, Melanie Adams, whose love for their brother has kept his memory alive.
The bond that has linked all of us to Ashley’s memory has been one of respect and joy in what he managed to accomplish with his short life, the courage, intertwining his freedom to that of others, and yet, making the ultimate sacrifice.
As the ANC, we know that every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals, and the Kriel family has certainly shown this.
We will continue to walk this journey with the Kriel family until the whole truth is uncovered and the family has final closure.
