A 38-year-old man was arrested for the murder of Peter Goliath, 70, who was murdered during a house robbery in Surrey Estate last week.
Mr Goliath died a gruesome death when two men robbed his home in Orion Street during the early hours of Saturday morning, August 25 (“Surrey Estate in shock after murder”, Athlone News, August 28).
He and his wife Elizabeth, were sound asleep in bed when Ms Goliath woke up to someone beating her. One of the robbers tried to suffocate her and when Mr Goliath tried to defend her, he was beaten to death.
Manenberg police spokesman, Captain Ian Bennett, said after interviewing numerous people, detectives apprehended the suspect on Thursday August 30.
The suspect appeared in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Monday September 3 on charges of murder and house robbery.
“The television and cellphone which were stolen during the robbery were both recovered and police are on the brink of making another arrest, “ said Captain Bennett.
“Detectives will be opposing bail. The investigation continues as more persons of interest will need to be brought in for questioning.”
