Last Friday’s heavy downpour could not dampen the spirit of the riders who took part in Heideveld Youth Cycling Club’s inaugural cycling festival.
Like clockwork, the skies cleared up early Saturday morning, just in time for the start of the event, at Manenberg SAPS.
This is something new in the neighbourhood,” says Reggie De Lilie, one of the organisers of the event.
“There were all these children who were knocking on my door early this morning asking, uncle Reggie is it still on?
“I’d like to thank everyone who helped to make this event a success, especially the volunteers who gave up their time to make sure things run smoothly.
Wendy Rhodes, who established the club in 2018, agreed, saying the weather played along nicely, making the ride through the neighbourhood a pleasant one.
“We struggled a bit in the beginning but we are moving forward now and we are looking to encourage more people and especially the youth to join us. Our aim is to empower them with tools and skills, to teach them how to fix their bikes, how to strip a bike and how to put it together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Community activist Vanessa Sauls, the founder of Hope For The Future also attended the event. “I connected with Wendy and she’s been talking about bicycles for the past two years. We support her vision in every way,” she said.
