The CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa, together with Lace Up for Change, will be participating, in this year’s Blisters for Bread run to raise funds for young cancer patients and their families.
The event, hosted by the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA), will be on Sunday August 28. It will start at Fritz Sonnenberg Road in Green Point and end at Green Point Cricket Club.
There will be two routes along the Sea Point Promenade: a 10km walk that will start at 7.45 am and a 5km walk that will start at 8am.
This year, Lace Up For Change and CHOC paired up to raise R15 000 for cancer patients and their parents who stay at one of the three CHOC houses across Cape Town while the young cancer patients receive treatment, said CHOC Western Cape regional manager Lynette Mutharay.
The Lace Up For Change volunteers will push 10 cancer patients in wheelchairs from CHOC and will have a stall at the finish line for the public to donate funds. The public can also visit lu4c.org.za to donate.
The money will be used to cover accommodation, food and transport for cancer patients and their families being helped by CHOC.
“The patients and their families stay free of charge so the funds will really help. We have 13 CHOC homes around the country and we really hope that the public will join in on the day and donate funds,” she said.
Lace Up For Change chairman Faizel Jacobs said that the organisation had participated in wheelchair runs since 2016 but had been unable to do so for the past three years because of the pandemic.
“The project is important to me because I was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in 2016 and participated in my first race back then with children from Red Cross Hospital,” he said.
PSFA director Petrina Pakoe said: “This event provides us with a platform to raise funds to feed impoverished schoolchildren and to create awareness of childhood hunger.”
