The Bridgetown Theatre Company (BTC), will be bringing the setwork books of Grade 11 and Grade 12 pupils alive through live theatre productions.
The BTC is therefore inviting schools to book for the free theatre productions, from Wednesday March 1 to Friday June 23. This is made possible by funding from the National Lottery Commission (NLC).
The theatre performances of Hamlet; Life of Pi; Fiela se kind; My children, my Africa; Krismis van Map Jacobs; Inzala; Lien se lankstaan skoene; Buzani Kubawo and Afrikaans poems and three Grade 11 set workbooks plays – Tsosti; Macbeth and Nathi Singabantu – are available to all Western Cape high schools.
Zelda Hintsa, the marketing manager of the BTC, said the project was a success from 2021 to 2022.
“Based on this, we discovered that there is an insatiable need to educate and concertize youth about supporting local theatre productions. The youth gets a taste of watching live theatre. Many of them do not have easy access to mainstream theatre because of challenges around transport or the cost of tickets. Also, theatre as a social construct has changed shape and access to theatre venues are physically out of reach. This setwork project is an attempt to correct the imbalance by taking theatre to the future theatre-goers. In a familiar social setting – places of learning – as well as to empower our learners to understand their setwork literature through live theatre,” Ms Hintsa said.
She added that staging of these productions has all the elements that appeal to the youth, which include hip hop music, dance, singing and acting.
“Most of all, it is exhilarating entertainment, imparts knowledge and new information, while at the same time having lots of fun,” Ms Hinsta said.
Any school who would like to book these shows can contact Jasmine Ziervogel at 079 165 0960 or check the Bridgetown Theatre Company Facebook page for more information.
