A Bonteheuwel youth organisation is looking for volunteers and donations.
Warren October said he started Scouts for Kids last year to teach youth that there was more to life than becoming a gangster. The non-profit company is not part of Scouts South Africa.
Scouts for Kids runs from Mondays to Thursdays after school at the Bluegum Community Centre. The children, aged 7 to 16, hear from various role models, get help with their homework and go for excursions around Cape Town, according to Mr October.
“Our aim is to keep them away from gangsterism and drugs, to teach them what is really important in life, teaching them good values and morals. Getting them involved on our hiking trips is our main aim to let them see there’s more in life than becoming a gangster.”
So far there are about 80 children in the organisation, and Mr October said they were also taught about caring for nature and keeping the community clean.
“Since they’ve been here, we have really made a difference in their lives. We would like females to come and help our at our after-school programmes to teach them skills like art work, reading, painting, dressmaking, doing hair, and more. Our main need is funding. We are also looking for different board games, and sports books.”
Natasha Mohamedi said that her children aged 9, 11, 14, and 16, had joined last year after going hiking and swimming with the group.
“Our children need this. They have playing ground there which keeps them off the road. They are always there for our children – donating clothing, food, and making a big deal of their birthdays. It’s a nice feeling knowing your children are part of a safe and secure group. I know that they are safe there, away from the shooting and keeping their minds busy,” she said.
Ellen da Silva said that her son and granddaughter had joined the group last year.
“They really enjoy themselves there. It’s a good thing to have this programme in Bonteheuwel. When I’m done making my food, I make a turn there and they are doing really good things with the children.”
