An employee from the City of the Cape Town’s recreation and parks department was attacked at the Manenberg swimming pool yesterday.
The 31-year-old was patrolling along the perimeter of the swimming pool just before 2pm. He noticed that a section of the concrete palisade fencing had been vandalised, then spotted a group of boys trying to gain entry to the facility through the opening.
He attempted to close the opening while calling law enforcement from his phone. One of the boys then hurled a brick at the man, hitting him in the face.
He sustained serious injury and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The City has condemned the attack.
Mayoral committee member for community services and health, Zahid Badroodien, said: “It is completely unacceptable and I call on anyone in the community who might have any information about this incident to please report it to the police. I’d like to wish our staff member a speedy recovery and will ensure that he receives the necessary support from the City’s employee assistance programme.”
This is the second incident at Manenberg swimming pool in the past few days. Last week, three vehicles belonging to a contractor, who was working at the swimming pool, were stoned too.
