Bouncing on trampolines seems to have very little to do with books, but preschoolers who took part in a five-week reading programme would beg to differ.
Claremont library ran the five-week programme up until the end of National Book Week on Monday September 11, and it ended with an Alice in Wonderland-theme party at a Claremont trampoline park.
Several of the six preschools that took part came from Manenberg thanks to a good working relationship between Claremont and Manenberg libraries, said assistant Claremont librarian Nuhaa Portland.
The programme was meant to encourage the children to “fall in love with reading”, she said.
During the programme, batches of 25 books were delivered to each of the preschools where staff were encouraged to read to the children and get them to review the books.
“The teacher provided feedback on how each theme and instruction was received by the learners,” said Ms Portland.
Iram Abrahams, principal of Smart Steps Academy, in Crawford, said: “We enjoyed doing the reading programme with them, and our children even drew posters of the books they read which would be hung up at Claremont library.”
Chanelle van Niekerk, principal of Little Lillies Educare in Manenberg, praised the library for its outreach work in a poor community.
