Both disabled and abled performers are being invited to audition in Athlone for Finna, a feature film.
The film, which is being produced by the Bridgetown Theatre Company in collaboration with Gemini Twins films and Allegiance Media Services, has elements of romantic comedy, dance, drama, action and adventure with English, Afrikaans and Xhosa dialogue, according to the producers.
The plot revolves around a principled young dancer who learns her wheelchair-bound younger sister, a respected community youth leader, intends to join a popular hip hop dance group to be near her love interest in defiance of her parents.
According to Jamiel Philander, the film’s producer, Finna is set to hit cinemas, TV and streaming sites next year, and it is a chance for both abled and disabled actors, singers and dancers to work together.
“We encourage the public’s acceptance and inclusivity of a diverse society that does not exclude disabled people,” he said.
Bridgetown Theatre Company chairman Vernon Piedt said Finna would see abled youth dance styles and music culture merging with disabled youth’s dance and music.
Production manager Joel Ruiters said the film depicted a young but talented dancer’s belief in her ability and her perseverance to succeed.
“It explores her moral dilemma of having to choose between her love for dance and her love for family. She tries to find a way to do both and suffers the consequences of this selflessness.”
Writer and director Theo Davids said: “Finna reflects the canvas of young people living their dreams irrespective of their dire circumstances.”
Auditions will be held at Cape Town College, 174 Kromboom Road, Athlone, on Saturday September 30. To book a slot call or WhatsApp Lauren or Gillian at 081 7917941or visit the Bridgetown Theatre Company Facebook page. Call 082 536 3651 for more information.
