Abdullah Adams doesn’t like cricket, oh no, he… um, well, you get the picture.
The Athlone teenager hopes to pursue his passion for the sport in Malaysia but needs your help getting there.
Fourteen-year-old Abdullah first picked up a cricket ball when he was four, which is hardly surprising given that he comes from a cricket-crazy family.
His grandfather, Abdullah Adams, played for the Western Province Coloured Cricket Union and introduced both his grandsons to the sport.
Abdullah and his older brother, Anees, now play for the Ottomans Cricket Club.
Abdullah attended Bridgetown High School before landing a bursary to Bishops Diocesan College in February this
year. He plays in the school’s under-14A team and also attends the Primrose Hub to improve his game under the watchful eye of his coach Shaheed Adonis.
He was part of the under-13 Primrose Hub team that won the Cape Town Winter Cricket Premier League in 2018. He scored 54 not out off 28 balls, and walked away with the Top Batsman award. He has a batting average of 73 and a bowling average of 12.
Now Abdullah has a chance to tour Malaysia in December with his mates at the club, but to do so he needs to find R25 000. His family are now trying to raise the money and have appealed to the public for help.
The team going to Malaysia will be playing a few T20 games as well as 50-over games.
Abdullah says he’s excited at the prospect of visiting Malaysia, not only to play cricket there but also to explore the country.
“I love the game and will spend hours playing cricket, I also play rugby at school, I like different kinds of sport however my aim is to walk in my grandfather’s footsteps and to make the SA team one day,” says the batting all-rounder.
