Children had fun doing arts and crafts at Lansdowne library during the school holidays.
They made caterpillars and flowers from egg trays, coloured in pictures, and took part in three-legged, potato and spoon races. They also enjoyed storytelling and on Friday October 7, they could each collect a craft pack from the library to keep them busy for the rest of the holiday.
Assistant librarian Zuraya Sassman said it was important for children to keep busy and off the streets but also to learn and keep their minds stimulated throughout the holiday. She said painting proved to be relaxing for the children. It improved their concentration skills and they could use their imaginations.
“The kids really enjoy these activities. We’ve had a good response from the community although we’ve had to keep it small because of limited space,” she said.
Fahiema Ebrahim from Ottery, who brought her two grandsons to the programme on Wednesday October 5, for arts and crafts, said it was important for children to mix with each other and develop friendships. She said the programme improved their mindsets and taught children how to interact with each other.
“It is important for kids to belong to a library because it improves their knowledge and language skills. I’ve been bringing them to the library since age 4. Reading is very important, I grew up with books and that is why I know that it is important for kids to be able to read. Many children don’t read anymore. My grandchildren’s parents have instilled the habit of reading before going to bed,” she said.
Mother Abdiyah Karriem from Sherwood Park, said children should interact with other children their age. She said these programmes sparked and fed their creativity.
“These activities are good for them, and it’s nice that it’s outdoors. These programmes expose them to various things. There is a range of different races and cultures that children are exposed to which is important. It also teaches them to share and work together which is good for their development,” she said.
