The family of a 37-year-old man who died in police custody are offering a reward to anybody who is able to shed some light on the nature of their son’s mysterious death.
Nadeem Khan was arrested by Rondebosch police on Thursday November 3, after suspicions that he may have been trying to sell a stolen cellphone outside the Riverside Mall in Rondebosch, earlier that afternoon.
Despite his parents, Sharina and Haroon, confirming that the cellphone indeed belonged to Nadeem, police still arrested and loaded Nadeem into the back of the police van.
On arrival at the Rondebosch police station, police found Nadeem hyperventilating in the back of the van and called paramedics, but soon after they arrived he was declared dead.
His death is a mystery and his family will not rest until the missing pieces of the puzzle have been found.
“We want to know what happened to our son.
“We have been asking that question and the fact that we cannot get answers is frustrating. We want answers and we want to know what happened to our son,” Mr Khan said.
He added that the family were struggling to come to terms with the death of their son, who was a qualified dental technician, describing Nadeem as “kind, compassionate, well-loved and polite”.
“He tried to sell one of his iPhones and he paid for it with his life.
“He leaves behind two boys, aged six and eight years old, who are now fatherless because of this brutal incident,” Mr Khan said.
The Retreat family are now urging the public to come forward with any information that could help them find the answers they are looking for.
They are prepared to offer a reward for any photos and video footage of the arrest outside the mall in Rondebosch, as well as information that could lead to the discovery of Nadeem’s missing car keys.
Nadeem had been driving a Citroen Xsara at the time of the incident.
“We will review footage and photos and a reward will be given for your contributions to resolve this case.
“He also lost his key for his Citroen, which was parked in front of the store (Pick * Pay at Riverside Mall),” Mr Khan said.
