Manenberg police are searching for the gunman who killed a 47-year-old security guard who worked at the old GF Jooste Hospital site in Duinefontein Road on Thursday December 27.
 According to Manenberg police station spokesman, Captain Ian Bennett, it is alleged the unknown gunman fired several shots at three security guards from Stormsriver Road.Â
He said the three security guards took cover and when the shooting stopped they found their colleague laying lifeless next to them with a bullet wound to the back of his head. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene. A case of murder and attempted murder has been opened for investigation and no arrests have been made.Â
In another incident, Manenberg police arrested a 31-year-old man in Groenberg Road, Heideveld, for the possession of two firearms and ammunition, on Thursday January 3. Â
Police searched the home after receiving a tip-off about illegal firearms and ammunition at an address and upon searching the premise being kept there.
They found the firearms hidden in the geyser compartment in the toilet.Â
This included a Glock 17, which had been reported stolen in Sea Point in 2004, with 17 rounds of live ammunition in the gun was recovered, as well as a 7.65 pistol, which had its serial number removed, with four live rounds of ammunition.Â
A brown packet containing an undisclosed amount of uncut tik and a packet with nine 7.65mm rounds of ammunition were also found in the man’s room.
 A further search of the house saw a packet with nine 7.65mm rounds found within the sleeping quarters of the 31-year-old man. He will be charged with the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and possession of tik. An additional charge of being in possession of a prohibited firearm will be added.
Manenberg police also arrested a 23-year-old man from Lataba Road, Manenberg, on Saturday December 29, for the possession of a firearm and ammunition after they responded to a shooting incident in Ruimte Road. They found the suspect with the firearm in his possession after several shots were fired in the road. On the same day police came under attack as they arrested a woman for selling drugs while holding a baby in her arms in Manenberg.Â
Police had received a tip-off of a woman selling drugs in Gamka Road Manenberg. It was alleged that she was using her one-year-old baby as cover while selling drugs. According to Captain Bennett, police observed the area where she was selling drugs and confronted her and found her with the baby on the arm. Upon searching her they found mandrax tablets, tik and 28 units of heroine hidden under her breast as she breast-fed her baby. The one-year-old baby has been handed over to relatives.Â
As police tried to put the woman in the police van they came under attack from some community members who did not want her to be arrested.Â
Also on the day, a 19-year-old man was arrested for the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition after police responded to a shooting incident in Plate Road, Manenberg, and saw the suspect with the firearm. They arrested him despite him trying to evade arrest. The man appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday January 2.
On the same day police arrested a 24-year-old man also in Plate Road for being in possession of tikseven units of tik, while members did stop and searches in the area. The man appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday January 2

On Thursday December 27 police from the Western Cape Flying Squad arrested two men in Vygieskraal for the possession of drugs. While conducting stop-and-search operations in the area, they stopped a suspicious vehicle with two occupants. One of the suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Police searched the vehicle and found two bags containing a total of 10 000 mandrax tablets and 10 grams of heroine. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is more than R100 000. A 28-year- old man was arrested and appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday January 2.
On the same day police arrested two men, aged 23 and 26, on outstanding warrants for housebreaking in Manenberg and a 36-year-old woman was arrested for malicious damage to property, also in Manenberg. The suspects appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Friday December 28.Â
On Wednesday December 26 Manenberg police arrested a man on a charge of attempted murder. While patrolling the area in Scheldt Walk, they saw a shooting and gave chase but the suspect got away and dropped the firearm.Â
Police followed up information which led them to an address in Jordan Street where they found the suspect at his girlfriend’s house. They arrested him and he was charged with attempted murder and the possession of an illegal firearm. The man appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday January 2.Â
Police also arrested a 37-year-old man from Tambo Village on Monday December 24 for contravening the Liquor Act. While busy with shebeen operations in the area, police found the man with an excessive amount of alcohol at his house with no licence to sell it. His alcohol was confiscated and he was arrested.
He received a R500 fine.Â
On the same day Manenberg police arrested a 28-year-old man for a robbery in Tambo Village after he allegedly robbed an 18-year-old woman of her cellphone. While patrolling the area police spotted the man and arrested him. He was charged with robbery and appeared in the Athlone Magistrates Court on Wednesday January 2.Â
