More than 100 senior women were treated to a lunch by Hanover Park’s fairy godmother, Sandy Lentoor, last week.
The lunch is an annual event at this time of the year to get the seniors into the festive spirit and show them how much they are appreciated in the community.
This year, the lunch was held at the Hanover Park community centre on Tuesday November 26.
Ms Lentoor, who is the chairwoman of the Fairy Seniors’ Club, said the elderly usually spend their days stuck at home looking after their grandchildren or doing housework, but she wanted to give them an opportunity to get out of the house and enjoy themselves.
Ms Lentoor’s friends helped her organise the lunch, which included a starter of savouries, a main course of roasted chicken, potatoes, sweet rice and beetroot salad, with ice-cream and cheesecake for dessert. Ballroom couple Zoe Booysen and Shelton Philips provided the entertainment.
The seniors enjoyed dancing and singing and Ms Lentoor performed some cabaret to a mix of Shirley Bassey songs.
“As an adopted child, my grandmother always took care of me, and this is my way of giving back to her. She has passed on so I can’t treat her, but I can treat other seniors,” she said.
Ms Lentoor also had help from the LGBTI community, Claremont Main Road Mosque, and the local butcher in Hanover Park, as well as the Youth Impact and Sustainable Solutions organisation, which provided youth to do the cooking and wait on the elderly.
Charmaine Theron, 71, from Hanover Park, has been part of the seniors’ club for three years now.
“Sandra really goes the extra mile for the seniors every year so that we can have this lunch. We really appreciate her and what she does. The children did everything for us, and we really enjoyed ourselves. They really spoilt us, and they really take care of us right through the year by doing our nails and hair and feeding us. We are very excited to wake up on the days we go to the club. We dance and enjoy ourselves,” she said.
